ABC news reports ‘alarmingly low’ use of spirometry

Why is this concerning? Spirometry is the gold standard to diagnose COPD. This concerning decline means that COPD is not being detected in early stages when evidence based interventions can slow disease progression and reduce exacerbations. This is particularly alarming considering COPD is the 5th highest cause of mortality and disease burden in Australia costing almost $25 billion. Lung Foundation is calling for urgent action. Proposed increases to medicare rebates will be a welcome & long overdue step.
